Amazing. I cannot do justice to how powerful this narrative is.

Frederick Douglass is an important figure in American history and his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, is perhaps his most known work. In it, Douglass details his experience as an enslaved person in Maryland and his eventual escape to the North.

Frederick Douglass does not hold back in his recounting of events and in his analysis of the hypocrisies of the Southern plantation class. At great risk to himself, he publicizes the names of his former owners. It is overall an engaging read.

My only complaint is the Appendix section. In it, Douglass condemns the religious hypocrisy of the South while also clarifying that he is not against religion. I had thought the earlier chapters in which Douglass detailed the paradox that the most fanatically religious slave owners were the ones treating their slaves with absolute brutality to be skillful and sharp. But the appendix was belaboring his point.

Just read this. And know how white people treated black people, not so very long ago. Know how capable people are of dehumanizing and utterly abusing others. We need that knowledge.
