I was entirely captured by the very first page. The rhetorical choices Douglas and Jacobs make in their slave narratives are integral to our understanding of their lives and their stories. These stories are political acts, and reading them as such is a key part of understanding them. I was blown away by how relevant their messages are to our present day, and I am forever in awe of their courage.

There are more graphic, exploitative stories about the horrors of slavery out there, but Douglass’ account is harrowing and nauseating at the same time. It can read a little dry, but if you really put yourself in his skin it might impart a minuscule notion of the violence and degradation even a “well treated” slave like himself went through. One of the more fascinating recollections is how the introduction of slavery into a household turns originally kind hearted slave owners into cruel masters, reminiscent of the Stanford Prison Experiment.

Brutal, fascinating, and well written. Can't say much more about this one.

i feel strange giving this a rating just because it’s not only a true narrative of someone’s life but also because of the subject matter. i read this for my african american lit class and i’m currently starting a paper on it, it was incredibly well written and douglass (based on his narrative and the speeches of his that i have read) is very gifted with words.
