Frederick Douglass was a remarkable man and his story is a remarkable one. There are some fantastic quotes throughout this book and I particularly liked his critique of what he calls false Christianity and true Christianity.

In terms of inhumanity, slavery is equivalent to the holocaust.

This is quite an interesting autobiography and incredibly informative. Frederick takes us through his life and how he learned English even though he wasn't provided the resources. Seeing his journey is really inspiring because he made the difficult journey of escaping to become a free man and create a better life for himself. He helped a lot of people and gave a lot of inspiration.

Excellent, short read. I should read his later autobiographies as well.

A powerful story from an ugly time. The frequent shifts from simple wording to complex phrases makes the Narrative especially riveting.

I am quite impressed with Frederick Douglass's story. While his is a well-known name, I never quite knew his full story. I thought it was quite interesting how he saw from the moment his master let it slip that literacy meant freedom. One of my favorite parts of this narrative is how he describes befriending local white children and bringing them food in exchange for knowledge. It's very inspiring how he really pushed himself, and he knew what he needed, so he went out and got it. I don't know if many slave narratives are like this, but I think Douglass's story is very influential.

It feels insane to even attempt to review this? I give it: literary canon/10
