I'd give this a 5 star just because Ranpo! I don't know where to start... i kinda love the backstory of Atsushi's entrance exam. And how Kunikida still plans everything to the tea, but then Dazai is still one step ahead of him. (Poor kunikida).
The main part of the story is Ranpo, and how Fukuzawa build the Armed Detective Agency around him. Ranpo was so cute in this, in the anime, he's already an adult but still acts like a kid. But here, he's literally just a kid and it made me smile just imagining it. Maybe i'm biased, but i really love Ranpo's backstory and why he is the way he is now. I love how sarcastic Ranpo is at times, especially when Fukuzawa gave him his business card (it's making me smile just remembering it). I just love how this novel gave me more lore about the anime. Some things made more sense to me now than before, like why is Ranpo so obsessed with Fukuzawa, how did Ranpo (even with his ultra deductive skills) think that he has an ability even though he doesn't, why (in the anime) it mentions that the Armed Detective Agency were made FOR Ranpo. I don't know, i just love ranpo so much, i'd give every episode/novel of him 5 stars without reading them. I'm in a fangirl mood so much right now.
Ps. Yosano is a bit weird in the novel, compared to the anime..... though i'd prefer the anime cause yosano novel is really scary

Me la pedí por Amazon, ya que esta es una de las novelas que no ha sido adaptada en animación (como lo han sido The azure Messenger, dark era, fifteen y dead apple). Fue tan buena como lo esperaba, de verdad siento que estas novelas le agregan mucho al universo y al contexto de la historia.
A DAY IN THE DETECTIVE AGENCY
Al inicio me quería saltar esta parte, porque quería leer la parte de Ranpo y no el presente, pero me sorprendió bastante. Se nos explica cómo se eligió el examen de entrada de Atsushi, además de darnos una idea de cómo era la dinámica en la agencia antes de que él llegara.
(Aún me perturba un poco lo de Naomi y Tanizaki, pero soy defensora de las teorías de 1. No son hermanos de verdad y 2. The Naomi is dead theory)
THE UNTOLD ORIGINS OF THE DETECTIVE AGENCY
No se por donde empezar, así que voy a hablar de los personajes
Ranpo: RANPO CHIQUITO. Fue interesante ver cómo su personalidad era distinta antes de ganar confianza en sí mismo; de verdad pensaba que las personas a su alrededor tenía un pensamiento similar, y por eso se frustraba cuando el resto no le entendía. Sabemos que en la actualidad él es consciente de que no tiene una habilidad, pero en su infancia, pensar que si la tenía fue lo que lo hizo feliz, le dio una razón de por que era diferente, le trajo un tipo de paz y entendimiento del mundo, y por eso no quiere abandonar esa mentira. Perder a sus padres lo dejó sin un adulto que le entendiera, y si bien es inteligente, no hay que olvidar que era un niño, necesitaba a alguien que lo apoyara. Su relación con Fukuzawa es la relación padre-hijo más sana de este universo, y me encanta.
Fukuzawa: es tan raro verlo intentando controlar a Ranpo. Si bien Fukuzawa es un pilar fundamenta en la agencia, tampoco sabemos tanto de él (en el manga están dando más info, pero aún no lo termino). Descubrimos que era respetado por su conocimiento en la artes marciales, y que después de dejar de asesinar, se dedicó a hacer de guardaespaldas (creo que esto fue después de Mori). Adoré ver su dinámica con Ranpo, aunque era muy chistoso ver cómo no le tenía paciencia de vez en cuando (entendible, Ranpo era medio odioso, pero pensar en formas de deshacerse el de él para calmarse? Fukuzawa estas bien??)
Oda: no sabía que iba a parecer. That was a surprise, verlo en sus tiempo antes de decidir no matar.
Hablemos del mundo, y de un tema que me llamo la atención: las habilidades. Estas no eran comunes, y muchos no sabían de sus existencia, lo que me hace preguntarme. ¿Siguen siendo raras en la actualidad, pero el espectador no se da cuenta ya que está acostumbrando a ver a organizaciones llenas de personas con estos poderes? ¿O se hicieron más comunes con el tiempo? Igual es importante pensar que, en el momento que transcurre la historia, hay más personas con habilidades en mundo, solo que muy jóvenes y que todavía no lo han descubierto.
Si bien ver a Ranpo encontrar felicidad y poder presenciar cómo se formó la agencia, dolía pensar en el resto e los personajes, que en ese mismo instante no estaban en sus mejores momentos: tanto Lucy como Atsushi estaban en el orfanato, Dazai tenía 10 años, haciendo lo que sea que lo dejo tan traumatizado, Yosano estaba en ese hospital raro, aterrorizada por lo qué pasó en la guerra, creo que Akutagawa luchaba por sobrevivir, Oda mataba a gente... nadie tuvo una infancia feliz... nadie.
Anyways, el libro me encantó. Con un poco de suerte, el próximo que me lea será Beast.

Ahhh this was a fun read
In this book we get to read about the night before Atsushi's entrance exam and how the agency decided what it would be, and also the backstory of Ranpo and Fukuzawa.
It was really interesting reading about the backstory of both Ranpo and Fukuzawa. I love how upon meeting Ranpo (who is 14 in this book) Fukuzawa just instantly acts like a dad even if he never verbalizes what he's thinking.
Also, Oda gets a mention in this book and the way I gasped when he appeared. We get to read about Oda's past when he worked alone as an assassin before the dark era when he decided not to kill anyone ever again.
Fukuzawa was like "It was as if he could see the future", and I was like you're damn right he can.
Although there's one thing I am confused about. In this book, Oda shoots the secretary whilst Ranpo is in the room whilst having his face covered with a sack. Then Fukuzawa reveals his face and Oda gets arrested. I'm assuming that during this scene that Ranpo saw Oda's face.
But here's the thing I'm confused about, during the dark era when Oda goes to take down Mimic he bumps into Ranpo. When Ranpo tries to guess where Oda is going, he doesn't recognize him and Oda doesn't recognize Ranpo. I would have thought they looked vaguely familiar to each other. Unless they never actually saw each other and I'm looking too far into it.
My favorite moments in this book:
- women trying to blow Dazai up
- Yosana proposing that the entrance exam should be filing down Atsushi's crotch until he cries
- Oda
- Fukuzawa unable to hold his dad back and asking Ranpo why he isn't eating his mochi
- Fukuzawa carrying Ranpo on his back
- Ranpo guessing almost everything about Fukuzawa
- Ranpo getting attached to Fukuzawa like a duckling
