I loved this so much, as it explains the origin of the agency, and really focuses on Ranpo and Fukuzawa and their relationship, how it formed, etc

this started off so funny but then it just comes swinging at you near the end. i also just love the dynamic the ada, and fukuzawa and ranpo have w each other

Maybe I'm just biased since Bungou Stray Dogs is my favorite anime, but I really loved this light novel so much. Especially that chaotic energy radiating off of nearly every page in the first section. 10/10 would recommend.

edit 07/2025: increasing my rating from 3.75 to 4 stars solely because ranpo’s struggles hit a little too close to home and his relationship with fukuzawa is so precious to me.
original review: although the writing style was a bit iffy to me (but that could just be an issue of translation), this was so much fun! I've already watched the bsd anime (which I have a significant amount of issues with having completed the manga), so I already knew what to expect going into this light novel, but there were so many little things about this novel that weren't adapted into the anime (for instance, there isn't anywhere near as much emphasis placed on ranpo's parents in the anime as there is in the light novel) that only elevated the story for me. and I didn't expect this to also include a short story following the night prior to atsushi's entrance exam! that was also such an unanticipated delight.

Though this isn’t the shortest of the Bungou Stray Dogs light novels, it reads very quickly and gives us some amazing insight into Ranpo + Fukuzawa, as well as a general outlook on relationships within the ADA.
