I'm really determined to find a thriller series that I can sink my teeth into. I love how easy they are to read and that they keep me reading (if only out of a stubborn need to know the end). They are like the Doritos of reading. But man, I just can't face another one of these. These are some of the least believable, most predictable characters ever written. The plot was entertaining enough to keep me going.

I can't remember if I've read other books by Iris Johansen (I think I have at some point? but my memory is so bad!!), but starting off at the beginning of the Eve Duncan series was a good call. I have a history of starting thriller series in the middle, so it was a nice change to actually start at the beginning of the Eve Duncan series. I really "got a feel" for Eve and her history, and I am quite interested to see how this is going to play out in other books in the series.

The plot of this book was ridiculously thick and intertwined, yet it still made sense and was very exciting. And the ending!! - wow. It was explosive, and I loved it!! Eve is so real, and so is Joe - although I thought her relationship with him was a little... I don't know. Maybe not as realistic as it could've been... but still realistic enough to not bother the reader terribly much.

Thankfully Johansen doesn't write graphic stuff, or else I've just gotten more used to graphic descriptions of death so it doesn't bother me anymore, at least as much as it used to.

On to book 2!!

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated

This took me forever to get through.
The beginning was really good, but then it just fell flat for me.
Not planning on picking up anymore of her books. I was not emotionally involved with any of the characters and the plots' "twists" were atrocious.

Bottom line: Should have read something else.

Incredible first book of the series. I had never read Iris Johansen so I was intrigued by the book’s description. Iris really knows how to keep a book flowing. It was tough to put down because there was always something either going to happen or in the midst of happening. Normally, I don’t read a thriller like this, so I’m impressed I stayed with it. Good job on the author for pulling me into a genre and story that I never expected to pick up.
