“The light had changed, too, adding to the stillness. The canopy far above diffused the sun into nothing more than glowing, golden air that hovered, suspended between the trees. The whole scene gave the innate feeling that you were leaving the world behind, entering into some imaginary place that didn't really exist. I wished that were true.”

I finished this in 48 hours. While this was a solid mystery that kept me suspicious of everybody right up until the end, the real draw for me was the captivating storyline beyond the mystery itself - something I've come to expect from every one of her books.

Adrienne Young has quite possibly become my new favorite author. For the past year, anytime someone asked for a recommendation my immediate response was The Unmaking of June Farrow. I absolutely adore that book. But after reading this one, I think I might have to broaden my future recommendations. Between June Farrow, Spells for Forgetting, and her newest A Sea of Unspoken Things you just can't go wrong. In my opinion, the way Young writes her characters and settings is unmatched. You are fully transported into the story through her gorgeous, atmospheric way with words. I want to live within the pages. She consistently delivers stories that I continue to think about long after I've finished them. I can easily say I will forever read everything and anything that she comes out with as soon as I can possibly get my hands on it.

I don’t have much to say about this one. I absolutely adored The Unmaking of June Farrow but A Sea of Unspoken Things felt incredibly underwhelming to me. The story wasn’t bad by any means, but I guess my expectations were too high after June Farrow. I wasn’t too engaged by the story and felt like my mind was wandering at times while I was reading this. I will say, this cover is stunning though!

Another good story from Adrienne Young! You know it's a good mystery/thriller when you can't predict the ending! I liked following James as she returned to where she grew up, and dealt with people and things from her past. This book was dark but thought provoking, particularly about family and what you'd do to protect them. The twin bond thing was interesting, as well.

I was happy that James and Micah made it work, in the end. I'm a sucker for second chances!

Overall, this was very well written, albeit dark, with a good mystery and poignant storytelling about family and relationships. I think that Spells for Forgetting and The Unmaking of June Farrow are a little better, but I still quite enjoyed it!

This is a taut, extremely well-paced, and emotional thriller and family drama that sucked me in right away. When her twin brother has died in what appears to be an accident, James comes back to her hometown after twenty years away to make peace with his death. But of course once she gets there, it doesn't really seem like an accident, and she decides to stay and try to figure it out.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book, since I'm not usually a huge fan of mysteries and thrillers. But I felt like this book had a ton of emotional depth, way more than I normally find in this genre (although to be fair, I don't read a lot of books in the genre, so I'm definitely not the best judge). James really wrestles with the reality of who her brother was and her own complicity in enabling his worst personality traits, and Young deftly explores how small towns protect their own, often to the detriment of outsiders and those who go against the grain, and how trauma follows you everywhere. The forest town of Six Rivers is impeccably atmospheric - it reminds me of Forks, IYKYK - and the mysteries unfold in a natural and, at least to me, mostly unpredictable way. James' grief is devastatingly articulated, and the cast of characters is compelling and nuanced. I really liked this one.
