Before I started this book, I was warned by my professor that this is Austen’s most romantic story. This is true! The letter made me cry.

This book is similar in many ways to it's predecesor Pride and Prejudice. However, the novel has a deeper, more realistic side to heartbreak and romance. I find that I identify very much with the characters and story to make this a captivating read.

Honestly, I listened to this and have no idea what happened or who anyone was. Lol. I was NOT in the right headspace for regency apparently... or this book just didn't do it for me. I'm not sure.

I just love Austen. And the thing I love most about her is that every single one of her books serves as a starting point for pretty much every single modern romance.

Persuasion is the shortest of the Austen's and as such an easy and quick read. Anne is likable and relatable and you feel for her at every turn because her family just doesn't value her - instead they seem to value status. They are prideful and are so unlike Anne and yet she just deals with them and lets them be. She is in pain and she's been heartbroken and Austen does such a good job of showing that and of then developing this narrative of Anne meeting her old love and the disappointment in knowing that he will move on with someone else. The emotion is just so present. And in addition to Anne's we do get a bit of Capt. Wentworth's feelings and his motivations and the tension between them is just so easily felt.

Overall just master storytelling. Jane Austen can do no wrong.

The good: Austen often inserts ironic and funny bits in her narrative, and she certainly weaves together a complex cast of characters who are easy to distinguish into "people you're supposed to like" and "people you're not supposed to like."

The bad: The plot is achingly slow, completely mired in utterly boring interpersonal machinations, and incredibly predictable. Perhaps it's just my modern eye that finds a romance difficult to comprehend which involves nothing even so improper as kissing, and mostly consists of staring demurely at each other and obliquely referring to unexpressed feelings.

Perhaps this book is a very important literary classic that was revolutionary in its time (the end certainly does seem like it is trying very blatantly to impress The Moral on the reader), but I wouldn't call it an enjoyable or interesting read for the modern person.

Persuasion by Jane Austen is a book I'd been putting off for way too long. I've only read a few of Jane Austen books and it's been awhile since I have. It took me a minute to get back into the style, but that said I really enjoyed the story. Captain Frederick is one of my favorite of her characters now I'd say. My complaints mainly go back to the audiobook - it was a bit tough to follow the audiobook production and who was speaking when. Otherwise, this would have been a four star story for me.
