A lot of people have mentioned not liking Notaros' first foray into fiction, some have cited reasons including a weak voice or vague character development.
I feel exactly the opposite. I loved this novel, and I've read (voraciously I might add) all of Notaros books. I find her articles and essays hilarious and identify greatly with her as a person. I also though this book has established her as an equally talented fiction writer as well.

A previous reviewer got it right when they said that they described Notaro's work as "overwrought overwriting." Instead of being humorous, I would read a sentence and simply think to myself, ohhhh, she's trying to be funny there. I couldn't bring myself to finish the book.
Not as good as her other things - it made me a little anxious - but fun to read over the holidays.
A Very funny look at trying to make friends after moving to a new town more than 500 miles away from the close knit group of friends it took more than 30 years to assemble. I laughed so hard I cried. A must read for anyone who has been publicly embarrassed and forced to live it down.
Didn't love it as much as her chick-lit, but it's awesome anyway.
Anyone who writes "I'd give my left arm to be a size 12 again" has me hooked.
I want to have mai-tais with Laurie Notaro

I loved this book. It is a fiction book, but loosely based off of the authors life. For anyone who has never been a perfect size model, this book will have you rolling on the floor laughing hysterically!
Laurie Notaro is one of my favorite authors and she never fails to make me laugh in her memoirs and story retellings. This book is (I think?) her first shot at a novel that's not autobiographical and I must admit I was disappointed. The book wasn't bad, but it was rather slow and somewhat predictable and over-dramatic. I don't know what I was expecting but I hope she sticks to collections of memoirs and stories because this doesn't do her justice.
Laugh out loud funny. As good as the essays. Wherever Spaulding, WA is, I want to move there so I can be friends with our heroine, Maye.
