My biggest gripe with this story is that I wanted more vivid descriptions of the main girls and the world they lived in. Based on the book’s description and cover, I expected to be transported into a beautiful alternate version of the past, one where I could clearly envision the setting and fully understand the characters’ environment. Instead, I had to rely entirely on my own knowledge of history. If you're not already familiar with the 1920s or its fashion, how would you even know what you're supposed to be picturing? This became an even bigger issue when trying to imagine what the characters actually looked like.

An interesting story, filled with potential. The world needs more sapphic vampires, and this addition is definitely one worth checking.

Former best friends, now enemies, two young women come together to solve murders in their community for their mutual benefit. The reluctant allyship rekindles feelings long buried, and perhaps reshapes this relationship while our main characters navigate life through their conflicting identities, their shared past, and dreams that seem forgotten and unattainable.

That being said, I occasionally found myself wanting more from the execution. The setting in itself, late 20s prohibition Harlem, sounds atmospheric and going in, I expected to feel more said atmosphere. The world building, along with the pacing could have used more work.

I will definitely be keeping an eye for the second book in this duology, as the faults of the book were not enough to kill my interest in the two main characters and their relationship.

This book doesn’t have a great ending it doesn’t tell you about Layla and doesn’t say what is going to happen to Josie. Hope there is a party two if not it’s kinda a waste to read.

I really liked the setting and the plot in this book! It felt very atmospheric, and the plot kept me interested the whole way through. I wasn’t huge of the characters though, I have a really hard time taking 18 year old gangsters seriously (the reason I DNF’d Six of Crows). I literally laughed out loud when the one character said something about wanting to squeeze the other girl’s heart in her hand or whatever she said. So dramatic lol. And the romance was pretty cringe for me. I liked Layla though, I thought she was a great character!

This was very, very good. I loved the complexity of Layla and Elise’s relationship and the reimagining of the classical vampire. The ending confused me a lot though, but I hope the sequel will explain it
