Cool concept, flawed execution.
The book follows two girls, Elise and Layla throughout an alternate 1920's New York where vampires prowl the streets. Layla is a vampire who has some history with Elise, who comes from a well-to-do family interested in curing vampirism.
However, though that's a good set-up, it just felt like there could've been more. I'm definitely giving this three stars on pure vibes alone, bc the plot was so confusing. Probably won't pick up the sequel, but this was an ok enough read.

I like a lot of the concepts, dynamics, and lore at play here and I thought the beginning was strong but it started to heavily drag around the halfway point for me. I wasn't really connected to the characters outside of the two mcs so anything that happened to them didn't move me much. this feels nitpicky but the contractions would switch between formal and informal and it was those sorts of little things that added up for me

the approach to vampirism is so well done, and i love a sapphic story with plenty of angst
the ending felt rushed and a bit jumbled but overall i enjoyed it

Sapphic! Vampires! In! New York! Let's go! The plot was a tiny bit convoluted at times and there were some contradicting beats that an editor should have caught but overall I had a damn great time. Jazz Age Harlem is SUCH a cool setting for a vampire novel. I can't wait for the sequel!

Oh man, what can I say about this book? I was feeling positive about this book it had things that I find interesting. Black Vampires and sapphic romances yes, please. Plus I am familiar with this author from their YouTube channel and was excited to support them. I wanted to like this book but unfortunately, it was disappointing.
The plot and characters felt underdeveloped. The story was boring, and the big reveal of the big bad was not surprising at all. Towards the end of the book, It felt like a race to close some plot lines but also open new ones that felt out of place and rushed through. The character's personalities were sacrificed for the sake of getting the story to point A to B and the romantic relationship between Lalya and Elise was undeveloped at the end of the book I was frustrated and disappointed.
There is so much more I can say but I am not a reviewer so I worry that I won't be able to get my opinion across the best. So all I can say is that maybe this needs more time or edits cause it felt too off but held so much promise. I do wish the best for this Author's future works.

This book started off really well. The ending was just all over the place and rushed. Choices characters made in the end didn't make sense.

I really enjoyed the plot and world. It felt odd that some of the characters were described one way, but never acted that way. I forget the exact line, but a character held back her sass, but not once was she sassy. I also think some of the characters motivations could've been stronger. Also, so weird hearing my name all the time!
