honestly this book felt a bit incomplete..? i didn’t rlly care about the romance and the story was just too boring for me. i feel like it really could’ve been great though if it had gone through some more editing maybe :[
I wanted to love love loveeeeee this book. The premise is vampires set in 1920s during the Harlem Renaissance with a touch of race and class issues. it's marketed as sapphic angsty enemies-to-lovers with mystery and romance and fell flat.
my favorite part of the story was the absolutely the setting and the atmosphere. it was dark and beautiful. but i wish i had more in the book that made me feel like i was THERE.
the story, however, was so so so slow. it felt like not a lot happened for a while. i'm giving it 3 stars because the last 10-15% were exciting enough, otherwise it would have been a 2.5. the writing style was inconsistent through the book and it made it hard to really get into the book.
thank you to netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a bit strange for me. This book is very out of my comfort zone because it's set in 1920s New York, and revolves a lot around gangsters. That's not something I've ever been interested in, but I wanted to give it a shot because:
- It's about vampires (which I love).
- I should try new things every once in a while--it's good for you.
Because of the above though, this book ended up being just fine. I wasn't overly obsessed with the setting, which made me a bit more disinterested than I would've been with a different one. The characters were very middle of the ground for me. I didn't really feel any type of way about them. And the plot was interesting, but (kind of) predictable.
In terms of the plot, it genuinely just kind of felt like something I'd read before. For example,
I do think it was decently well written, but there were some points where I felt confused. It was hard to follow POV switches (especially it being in third person), and sometimes it just felt like characters were appearing out of thin air.
So, in general this book was just not for me. However, I can see why people could fall in love with it.

Loved reading this book and these characters, and hated that they had to go through this, and I can't wait for the sequel!

- I read this trying to cure my cravings for vampires after reading immortal dark, and I’m here to say that it did not work. I thought the story was really interesting and I loved all the sapphic vampires. I also really enjoyed the Gothic 1920s vibe but I just didn’t connect with the two main characters at all and that’s really where it fell flat for me. I also thought that the chapters were really short and just jumped around a little too much.
