Like many of us, I grew up with the Disney version of The Jungle Book. But it was only a few decades later that I finally read the book, and I am happy to have (re)discovered this story through his original work. I was a little surprised to discover that The Jungle Book is actually a collection of tales and poems, of which Mowgli's story is the most memorable.

And unfortunately this is not the case for all of them. Personally, I loved the story of the little mongoose almost as much as that of Mowgli. The one with the little seal was also rather memorable, but the last two didn't grab me at all and I had to force my way through them. In the end, I settled on a 3,5 star rating, due to my lack of enjoyment of the last two stories.

Really REALLY good. If you've only ever seen the Disney version you're missing out.

The extra stories aside Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (which I have read before) were just OK. The main story was really good.

Very interesting, a lot different from the movies, and includes other stories I never knew about. Also the poetry and music are sort of haunting and awesome.

Mowgli's story here is so much better than it is in the movies. Rikki-tikki-tavi is riveting. The White Seal shows Kipling's sincere effort in trying to understand animal behavior.

The only drawback is the dense language of a bygone age.
