I loved this! I guess I only read "book one," as I had to read about Mowgli before I saw the new movie that's coming out. I just loved how each animal was depicted so clearly! I think the fact that it jumped around a bit might confuse 7th graders, but I thoroughly enjoyed this short journey.

I'm so glad I waited this long to read this classic in this "Minalima" edition, because the illustration, art and production add another layer to the book.
The first few chapters are the main inspiration for the Disney movie with familiar characters like Mowgli and Balloo and Bagheera and the Wolf Pack and Shere Khan and others, with some big differences in characters portrayals and events, but the main gist is still there, then the following chapter deviate from these characters and tries to capture the lives of different animals, like elephants and seals and mongooses and snakes and others, mainly in India.
The speech was done in something similar to old English, but the stories felt as if Kipling was retelling it instead of just writing it. I liked it and though I was hesitant to read this since it's a classic, and not all of them age well, but I liked it. I still had some reservations when it came to animals treatment in the chapters that included humans, I hated the way and portrayal of elephants put to work, but I guess I could get over it.

من المؤسف أن اللذة التي كنت أشعر بها لدى قراءتي هذا النوع من الكتب لم تعد كالسابق. المغامرات، الحيوانات المتكلمة، التورية والرمزية التي ترد على لسانها وفي قصصها، لقد مر وقت كانت فيه هذه القصص الأحب إلى قلبي. لقد قرأت الكتاب باستمتاع، ولقد كانت جميع قصصه جميلة، ساعتين كفيلتان بأن يلتهم أي قارئ الكتاب بأكمله، لكنني متيقن بأنني كنت لأحبه أكثر لو أنني قرأته في طفولتي، فالقصص التي كانت في حينه تثير الأمل وتنعش الخيال، تثير الآن الخيبة والإحساس بمرارة الاستحالة.
بالإجمال؛ أقل من المتوقع، وربما من اللازم أيضا. ذلك أنه كان بإمكان الكاتب أن يتوسع في عدد من القصص حتى يمنحها معنى باقٍ حتى لدى المتقدمين في السن من القارئين. لكن ليس من العادل التقليل من شأن هذه المجموعة بأي حال من الأحوال، إنها ممتعة، وأظنها كذلك بالنسبة لأي قارئ كان.
