The Jungle Book

Rudyard Kipling

It didn't swipe me off my feet, but it was a nice read.
the characters were enjoyable, but I couldn't relate to any of them. The stories were short and mostly independent of each other and more than half didn't even take place in the jungle, but I'll take what I can. Life gave me lemons. :)

Lovely writing, uneven story telling. The tales of the 'man-cub' Mowgli are gripping and filled with the best anthropomorphism I've ever encountered in literature. Others stories are lightly entertaining and whimsical.

Kipling using the animal kingdom to discuss and confront death. While there is much literary merit (and fun!) for adults, The Jungle Book is a perfect tool to help young readers learn hard life lessons.

This is one of the most horrible books I’ve ever read. Why are we still celebrating these books and Rudyard Kipling in general? From the lessons that man is better than animals to the overarching theme that the white man is superior to all, this book does nothing but teach white supremacy. Reading it to children is irresponsible and Rudyard Kipling needs to disappear into obscurity for the racist **** that he was.

4.3/5!! Though I love both this and the Disney classic, it's plain to see just how startling different they are.

Mowgli is a much tougher little man-cub, Baloo the bear is wise and stern, Kaa the snake is a formidable ally instead of a threat, the Bandar-log (monkies) are still outcasts and despised but they have no King Louis, and Shere Khan is killed and skinned instead of being chased off. Bagheera, who's always been my favourite character of the story, is relatively the same as his Disney counterpart. He's still wise and concerned, with a firm gentleness about him. And he still berates Baloo! Though rather than for being too carefree, he nags at him for being too hard on Mowgli.

I absolutely loved reading this, it was so enjoyable to dip into each section. I love the way Kipling writes his dialogue and narration.

One of my favourite things about this were the poems/songs he wrote after every section, my personal favourite being 'Road Song of the Bandar-Log'.

Well, this sure was nothing like the movie. Or the awesome Saturday morning cartoon Jungle Cubs. Was I the only one who ever watched that? Probably. Anyway, I had to read this after reading [b:The Tiger's Wife|8366402|The Tiger's Wife|Téa Obreht|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327877263s/8366402.jpg|13221524]. I didn't love that book, but the main dude carried around The Jungle Book the whole time, so I figured there had to be some significance.

I enjoyed catching up on this classic. It's meant for kids so that makes for a quick and easy read. A summary: Jungle life--and regular life--is quick and cruel, and none of us fits in perfectly anywhere.

I will admit this was my first time through reading the Jungle Book, and aside from the rather strong pro-colonialism vibe (which you know, a man of his times, yada yada yada) I enjoyed it.

But now I...just sort of thoroughly hate Disney even more for what they have done to the most well known story of all of them.

Creo que es lo primero que leo sobre India y me gustó bastante. Fue denso tener que leer las atrocidades que hacemos a los animales.
