The Jungle Book

Rudyard Kipling

3.54 AVERAGE

Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book is quite different than Disney's versions. I have been trying to read the children's classics with my kids so they can see the difference between the book and movie versions of their favorite stories. This story was well written and interesting. The characters do speak in old English, which my kids found quite entertaining! I'm glad we read this!

Enjoyable enough, if a bit scattered. "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" was the highlight.

…not really for me…it wasn’t what I thought it’d be, I didn’t realize it was gonna be a bunch of short stories focusing on different characters, but I have to say, I did enjoy some stories a lot more than others…

A classic worth reading once. Somehow giving 3 stars seems to low, yet 4 stars is too high when I compare it to other books. 3.5 might be a more valid grade.

Still, I found it pleasant to read, I didn't know that the Jungle Book is basically a collection of different short stories, with the biggest and most famous one being about Mowgli.

Going into this story I thought that it was just the story of Mowgli as I have seen the Disney movie and he was the main focus. However in the novel there are many other short stories, and the story of Mowgli is only a small portion of the actually novel. I did enjoy the stories but with any collection of short stories there is a hit miss ratio, some of the stories I flew through while others took me a while to get through. My favorites include “The White Seal” and Rikki Tikki Tavi”. Overall I enjoyed the majority of the book this was my first intro to India folk tales/ myths and I really enjoyed comparing the stories to the English folk tales that I know and love.
