a story about two men who fought together against a common enemy and loved each other like brothers. they had very different ideas of how to rule. they let others get into their ears  and posioned them against each other. they were convinced that they had to act in certain ways to show they are "men" and couldn't let "disrespect" slide. they waged war and backstabbed each other until one finally was defeated.

I liked this book even though at times I was very frustrated with these two not having a real and honest conversation with each other about perceived slights.   I'm excited to see where the next book goes.

DID NOT FINISH: 12%

I didn’t enjoy the narrator, also the setting and unfamiliar character names made it hard for me personally to follow while also walking the dog 😂

I’ll definitely come back to it but in print.

This is a book unlike any Ive read and I mean that as neither a good or bad thing. It takes place in a very different culture from my own and I found it very refreshing if confusing at points. It reminds me a lot of Indonesia.

The narrator is very far removed and the plot follows this same pattern throughout: Introduce character, info dump, event, next event in sequence, repeat. Its incredibly linear and many times I was disappointed it spent so little time on certain events. I would have preferred a more personal, closer look. This allows the plot to cover more time and events than many others cover in entire series. Again, Im not sure if this is bad or not, but it does mean it never leaves you bored. Don't care about whats going on here? Give it a page. We'll be on to something else.

The book did falter a little in the last quarter. The characters aren't as strong, the events a little less interesting, and its, if possible, even more summative, as if the author just wanted to be done.

All in all, it was good and surprisingly fast read, but Im not going to seek out its sequels.
