I almost DNF'd this so many times. I would really struggle through sections and then get really into other parts. The FMC is horrible, she's like a toddler having a tantrum. I'm not someone that looks for loopholes or tries to figure out the twists but I could see the twists coming from a mile away. They were so obvious that I literally yelled at the book multiple times and so many eye rolls when they happened and it was a huge deal. I normally listen to an audiobook in 3ish days, it took me 18 days to get through this one. I had to stop listening so many times because I was so annoyed. There are so many things wrong with this book but the storyline is decent so I really wish I could get over the issues and continue the series but I will not be.

i was really digging this book up until we hit ~600 pages and then it really started to feel its length like i wanted it to be so over and i knew every revelation that was coming; her mom i low key hated but she maybe turned it around but that is yet to be determined; also im sorry her aversion to killing is really starting to piss me off like i’m sorry you can’t just let these people go you have to like lock them up or something so essentially i really need her to go batshit in the next book cause people need to die i fear or else it feels like there are no consequences like i need someone she spared to kill someone vital (cough vance cough); however i still enjoyed this overall just got a little eepy with it

I feel like this was way longer than it needed to be, but the overall plot was good. But it really didn't need to be over 1000 pages long and it did drag a bit in several parts.

This series had a lot of potential but I am now seeing what other reviews are banging on about - Diem is an idiot with a capital I. How she keeps getting surprised by things the reader can see a mile off, I’ll never know. I feel like her character has had zero growth despite becoming arguably the most powerful Crown/being in any fantasy series I’ve read. It’s such a shame because the politics and lore of this world continue to be so intriguing. The romance also fell quite flat in this one compared to the first two. Hoping the author gets back to that secret sauce for the final instalment and is able to wrap the series up well and then I’ll maybe forgive having to read 1000 pages of Diem’s stupidity 😂
