Yes, it's a woefully unoriginal rip off of Dexter season 1. Do I care? No. No, I don't care at all. I like it. I'm happy with it this way. There are bunches and bunches of fairy tale retellings, why not Dexter?
Besides, reading Dexter was a hugely epic fail for me, the only time in my life that I've ever been able to say that the on-screen version was better than the book. So I'm just going to pretend that *this* is the book version of the show I loved (right up until the shitty, shitty series ending).
As for the slut-shaming. Ehhhhh....
Isn't the mind-set behind slut-shaming supposedly "sex is bad," or "sex with multiple partners is bad" not "being irresponsible is bad?"
Lane doesn't know if her sister is practicing safe sex with her never-ending string of partners and predicts that Daisy will get pregnant. The implication is that she's probably being irresponsible. She calls her a slut, yes. It is possible to use that word without it being "slut-shaming." There's a big difference between "Ugh, she's such a slut" and "Lol you're such a slut" and it's the speaker's attitude. "Slut" in both cases still indicates that someone is out sexing it up.
Would it be nice if Lane acted like she was concerned even a little bit if bad things like STDs and babies happened to her sister? Yes. Yes, definitely. Even if you don't like your sister you should, you know, care. And Lane does indicate later in the book that even though they don't get along, she does give a shit about Daisy's well-being. Just... buy her some condoms or something, jesus... don't just sit there and bitch.
Some people have also mentioned Lane slut-shaming Belinda. Ok, she does say, and I quote, "What a disgusting girl" when presented with pictures of Belinda screwing the boy she supposedly stole from Lane. She is using her vagina as a weapon. And that's a disgusting thing to do. Come on. Not the sex act. The shoving-this-in-your-face-for-no-real-reason-other-than-bitchiness act. It would still be a disgusting thing to do if it were pictures of her playing with Lane's stolen puppy instead of pictures of her sexing it up with Lane's stolen boyfriend. Puppy/boyfriend. It doesn't matter. If you got those pictures, you'd be all "You are a disgusting person. You disgust me. Please leave my life."
Does the book at the very least toe the line on slut-shaming? Yeah, ok, I'll give you that one. Yes. The whole topic probably could have been handled a lot better.
I didn't like the ending. When the big reveal came I was surprised. It was not a good kind of "Whaaaaaaaaat??? Oh no she di'int!!!" surprise. It was a "WUT? No, that's stupid. That doesn't make any sense." Followed by the main character taking actions with a weapon that are probably not actually physically possible.
Getting to the reveal was kind of like tracking a rabbit trough the woods and finding a deer.
The deer's all "Heyyyyy... I sure surprised you, didn't I!"
And you say, "Well, yeah, Deer. I was tracking a rabbit. Those were rabbit tracks in the mud back there."
"Ha ha, no, man, that was me all along," says the deer with a shit-eating grin.
And you're angry now, because the deer is fucking with you and OBVIOUSLY INCORRECT. So you say, "NO, Deer. Those were definitely rabbit tracks. I don't know HOW you got here; obviously you teleported or something because I was definitely tracking a fucking. rabbit."
And I've gotten weirdly off track, but you're mad either way and that's my point.
Also "the Decapitator" is a stupid name for a serial killer. Just is.
ANYWHO. I sound like I hated this book and I didn't. I loved it. I just wish it were a one-shot and I had been satisfied with the ending. As it is, I'm going to pick up the next book because I need mooooaaaaarrrrr. Both of Lane and of ... fucking resolution, dammit.
AND IF BOOK TWO TURNS OUT TO BE DEXTER SEASON TWO REHASHED, I WILL STILL LOVE IT FOR WHO IT IS, DAMMIT.
I "read" the audio book and the narrator, Emily Woo Zeller, was phenomenal. I look forward to listening to more of her work.

This was extremely disturbing. When I picked this book up at the library, I thought it was a book about a girl hunting a serial killer. Which sounded interesting.
I WAS WRONG!
This is about a girl who IS A SERIAL KILLER. Within the first chapter, Lane (the M.C.) decides that as a seventeenth birthday present to herself, she is going to kill a rapist. Now, what about that sentence seems wrong to you? Everything.
I'm not saying that the rapist was justified (because he wasn't) but neither is the teenage serial killer who decides to kill him (she doesn't actually but still). After this, I DNF'ed because it was repulsive. I mean, disgusting and horrific and completely terrible.
The blurb states "Lane is a typical teenager". HOW WAS THIS PUT HERE? Lane is a serial killer. Your typical teenager is NOT A SERIAL KILLER!!
So, if you value an unscarred life, I suggest you don't read this. I honestly wish to go back in time and slap myself if I even think about picking up this book. The only redeeming quality was the writing: style not substance. Because as I've stated above, the content is atrocious. Beware this book.

I hated the ending, It felt incomplete but I still overall liked the story the author had set up so many people to be the killer & I was shocked when I found out who was the real killer. I think it was an okay book, I would recommend it to people who haven’t read a book in a hot minute & want something easier to get back into
3.5
This is a twisted thriller ride for YA readers. It is a handy tool for getting fans of Dexter to read a book, and then perhaps a few more...
For those concerned about the slut-shaming, I think the narrator sounds like a typical snarky teenager, especially one who is embarrassed and beleaguered by her younger sister -but won’t tolerate anyone else messing with her. It’s obvious from her own behavior that she doesn’t believe it anyway. When we find out more about the family, it’s pretty understandable that the girls are struggling with identity etc. The narrator is intelligent but has no idea what’s she’s doing or why.
The ending is absurd and doesn’t really hold up, but my teen non-reader cousins were thrilled with it. I think they liked the agency the narrator claims for herself, recognized the lies that family histories often contain, and the dramatizing of how unexpected your mother’s story and motivations can be.

**Won this book from an audio contest held by the author**
I've always been against audiobooks. I don't know, the more someone talks at me, instead of to me, the more I tune them out; so, naturally, I didn't think I would ever read an audiobook. Then I won this one and was basically obligated. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be: I actually enjoyed it for the most part. (I listened to it on my way to work every morning and on the way back home. Took me about 5 days to complete it.) I will say that I wasn't the biggest fan of the narrator, though. Her male impressions were horrible. Anyways, enough on the medium, let's get down to the story: It's a mix of Dexter and Criminal Minds in the form of a teenage girl. Lane's character will confuse the heck out of you: One minute she wants to know what it feels like to kill, the next she's letting people off without death. I also didn't appreciate the derogatory way she spoke about her little sitter. Slut shaming, even in book form, is getting on my nerves. I know, my feminism is showing. The action in the book was awesome to listen to, and I often found myself reacting audibly, much like those annoying individuals that go to the movies and feel the need to comment on everything happening on screen. But I was in my car, so no harm done. The ending, though -_- It really leaves you hanging and left feeling like you wasted time with the rest of the book. You have no idea what kind of person Lane will end up being. I honestly don’t know if I would recommend this one. The first two-thirds of the book make me want to say “yes, do read it,” but that last little bit of the novel gives me pause—I hate that. I know I won’t be reading it again if that helps...***UPDATE*** Found out this is a series, which makes me happy, so I'll be checking out the next one!

I'm really not sure about this book. Lane the main character, was supposed to be this twisted girl who thought she might have serial killer tendencies. She just really didn't come off that way though, she was different, and a loner, But definitely not extremely twisted. I guess I just want my crazy to be extremely crazy! Also all her superhero antics were well, not very realistic. The most trusted part about this book was the ending, that I definitely did not see coming. Well I read the next book in the series? Honestly it depends on the price.
Read in a day, well half a day, a very quick read. I don’t read a lot of young adult, I found this to be very stereotypical of people and high school “classes/groups”. Lane was a fine protagonist if you want to call her that. None of the characters were well developed, the plot feels torn from popular true crime and thriller tv shows: enter Dexter... honestly almost full on Dexter many times. It’s unoriginal.
I found the bad guy to be a twist, but even then there wasn’t enough clarity on the development or build up... and the ending. The ending was not intentional in its writing, and it felt lacking.
Maybe teens who are just entering the genre will love it. I bought the book at a used book sale and for the cost and effort, I give it a high two stars, if I paid full price... now that would most likely decrease the star value!
Cheers!

It wasn't all that good. Rather boring, really. I found myself skipping pages out of boredom. She was made out to be really intelligent, but I didn't see any in the text, not really. The idea was great but..eh.
