Not my favorite Jennifer Haigh book. Five people are a mess, possibly because the parents fell in love, but were ill-suited to each other.
Things get better for all five in the last 20 pages of the book.
This is my impression several hours after finishing the book.

As a scientific review editor, I think I understood the science part of this book more than the "average joe" reader. It has a LOT of genetic science in it that I think would bore the average reader and probably even turn away some. It took me until nearly half way through to really get into it and get interested in the characters, but once I did, I was hooked and loved the second half.

This probably only deserves 3.5 stars but since I liked this better than mrs Kimble to which I gave 3 stars I went wi the 4 on this one. She seemed to have gotten deeper wi these characters than in other novels. While all her characters are deeply flawed at least most of these characters achieved at least a bit of self awareness at some point during the novel.

I would maybe give the second half of the book 2 stars, but i hated the entire first half of this book, found every single character unlikable, and didn't like the ending. So.... One star it is.

This started out interesting and went south quickly. I don't recommend it at all, in fact I just stopped reading it. I have read another of this authors books, which I remember liking, so I was disapointed.

On the one hand, this is a very insightful author -- she really captured some human truths in this book. But there were some editing oversights that bothered me (for example, she describes resorting to blackmail -- promising a trip to the ice cream shop if her kids behave. -- which is bribery, not blackmail.). Just picky little things, but they detracted from an otherwise richly told story.

I really enjoyed this book and getting to know the members of this flawed family.
