Another book that should be read. It tells a tale as old as time: love. It’s raw it shows the common flaws that many women and men face throughout their lives

This is the second time I read this book the first time was in high school. I read this for a book club and for that I think I would have DNF it. Literary fiction is not really my thing and I get the cultural significance of this book, especially at a time when a black female author was a rare thing. That being said I cannot get into this book. I really agree with John Green that “books should be fun” as reading is a hobby. I did not have fun reading this book. If literary fiction is your deal read Sula by Toni Morrison instead. I loved that book.

Oh how magical it is to read about love and about reckoning with the power of true love.
After Janie escapes two marriages that were built on a foundation of “mislove” she leads a life of contentedness shlepping with an alluring man who is an adventurer at heart. She learns how it feels to explore and truly live her own life.

Tea Cake wasn't for me, but he was for Janie and that's what matters. This book makes me want to go out and find my own Tea Cake-be it a person, place, thing, or at the end of the day simply myself.
