I remember buying the where the crawdads sing not before the movie was released in Australian cinemas a while ago, unfortunately i didn't get around to reading the book before the movie and but surpisly liked the movie.

I have seen reviews where people have said it's a struggle to get through this book

I can't remember the movie doing this, but the book alternates between the 50s and 60s, one chapter is set in the 50s with Kya as a child, while another is the 60s with Chase as a teenager. I thought the movie has Chase and Kya roughly the same age, or at least both adults rather than one at age 7 and the other 18+.

I have to ask Delia Owens why the 1950s and 1960s? Why  in rural America too?

I've read a lot of books over the past 20 odd years, as well as watched a lot of cinema. Now I don't know much about American language evolution, but reading this book did feel very film specific, that at times it felt like it was playing into the cliche of 1950s language rather than language in general.

I can see why people aren't too keen on this story but at the same time the concept is there. The murder of Chase Owens seems pointless but the romance between Kya and Tate seems budding until it switches to Chase and Kya.

An absolutely incredible read and an easy 5 stars from me. I was hooked the entire way through. The writing painted such clear pictures, which only served to add to a plot that held my complete attention. I loved the writing bouncing back and forth from the murder-mystery and Kya's growing up.
My heart hurt for Kya so many times, but I feel like the ending brought that "against all odds" feeling I was hoping for. Watching her navigate abandonment, isolation, and survival, was emotional. I found myself rooting for her every page. Her creation and recreation of love was raw and heartbreaking at times. Each character felt so thought through and necessary in their own regard and in how they added to Kya's overall story.

I'm pretty sure this book will stick in my brain until I eventually find myself rereading it.

I just wish we got the HOW!!!

Feels a bit like something you’d be forced to read in English at school and then you end up realising it’s actually really really good.
Beautiful storytelling and the more I reflect on it, the more I realise how clever it really was.

A classic summer staple of mine!

The imagery Owens uses is so vivid and truly paints a picture of the marsh in your mind, you can feel the warm summer breeze and hear the buzz of insects as you're pulled deeper into the story. I adored the style of writing, though it lost me a few times, I was generally entranced by this book. I kept picking it back up throughout the day just to see how each chapter would finish, and to become enthralled yet again in the intricate environment painted out.
As for general content of the book, I'm not personally a huge romance fan, and couldn't really get into the romantic parts of the book. I much rather enjoyed Kya learning to survive and reading each segment with the trial.
