A good and easy read, but filled with a lot of descriptions.

A heart-warming and heart-breaking story of love, loss, and life.

Not hating on this use of a simile, but just as the marsh goes on forever on a hot sunny day, so do the author's words describing the marsh, the sea, Kya's shack, the forest, etc., which is quite a lot of the book.

It could also be seen as slowing the story down by using the multi-worded descriptions, as another simile as to the hot sticky summer days that seem to go slow and drag on.

I did enjoy the book as a whole and would recommend it as an easy read, a summer read, to get out of a reading rut, or just enjoy a casual read.

The book starts really slow, but it’s really good once you get into it

I FINALLY FINISHED. this book was quite a journey. I think it was maybe the writing style or just the plot in general that kind of put me into a reading slump  but I couldn’t enjoy this book. I expected a fun murder mystery but I got a weird love story with way too long descriptions about feathers or the marsh in general that made the book so much longer than it was. the beginning was weird and the only thing that I kind of enjoyed was the questioning at the end. I did kind of expect the ending just because people always said it’s gonna be crazy but it’s quite predictable. but I have to say I’m really not impressed with this book I expected more and better. I do hav to say that I liked the ongoing conversation about racism as well as alcohol and abuse but this book was a huge disappointment.

btw huge red flag that the author is wanted for questioning about a murder

- Warning, the author [Delia Owens] has had many alarming accusations that allegedly include murder/racism/perpetuating racial sterotypes/etc] so please keep that in mind. I bought it at goodwill without knowing a thing about the book or author -

This book really captured my attention. The description's of Kya's environment drew me in. The food, though it was just grits and beets, still had me hungry. I loved hearing about Kya and her thoughts. Tate was nice. Chase deserved it.
So I'm confused. From the beginning, I knew for certain it was Kya. Is this supposed to be a mystery to the reader? It's marketed as so, and many on social media were "shocked by the plot twist" and I'm confused. Are they shocked about Kya killing Chase or are they shocked about when/why/how Tate found out?
I was completely 100% sure from the first chapter that she did it. The set up, switching pov's/time/etc it was so obvious to me. I just figured it was a story about "Unwrapping how/why Kya did it/her life story" rather than "here's a murder that our main character is accused of but she didn't do it! Plot twist! She did!"
The thing that got me was how and when Tate found out. Like I knew as soon as he opened the journal he'd find out that way, but my heart was racing as I read it because I wanted to know his thoughts!

Anywho, this book is really conflicting to me. It's a three because it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, because for a mystery, I want a twist that shocks me to the core. And I don't think this book is meant to be that.

The loneliness was truly enveloping and seemed to hum a tune. I was ecstatic to read the book as soon as I saw the novel release of the film adaptation, as I'd been hearing good things about it from various people. When it came to the storytelling, the indication of how nature complements humans in their way of life was a striking part. In the character's mind, her security was more important than anything else than being left alone for all she knew, and rather than living in fear, she displayed that instance of survival instincts display that could be observed in the nature of animals. Poetry, knowledge, art, relationship dynamics, failures, and true and deep familial love—this novel will serve as a reminder.

A great read but I did hop on the bandwagon to make sure I finished the book before seeing the movie sunday! I loved the characters, the emotion, the drama, and yet the beautiful simplicity of it all
but wtf I didn’t think she actually killed chase I’ll be interested to see what the movie does w that I always thought Tate did it in an act of love for Kya??

DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER FIRST. The whole time I thought the book was about a murder when instead it was about a girl’s development into a woman. It’s so heartfelt and also a little suspenseful.
