A bizarre folk horror tale. Not as shocking as it had been pitched to me, but i think that’s more a matter of taste - and I’ve a strong stomach.

Was an easy, fast pace read for me and i enjoyed the mysterious setting and strange cast of characters.

Enjoyed this enough to read more Moshfegh. I only come away feeling I need to read more folk horror (a genre I love in film) as it fell short of fully scratching that itch.

This book was uncomfortable in so many ways. Really compelling and well written but just so unpleasant.

Otessa is a sickenly good writer. Many of the events are out of my comfort zone. Sometimes i went to bed and was unable to sleep bc of how disgusting a chapter was.

 Yet, i couldn't stop.

She shines a microscope on a degeneracy of men, the mass poverty inherent to a fiefdom, the dirt, grime, sickness, and violence of it all. Nothing is off the table.

Then, the part with pedophilia and rape came, and i could no longer say that i truly enjoyed this tale.

Holier than thou.
You are in for a ride. Lots of Christianity in here, but not in a missionary sort of way.
