Whew, this book put me through all sorts of emotions. I had to pause every now and then to ask myself some questions. Although this is historical fiction, the trajectory and experiences of these women could easily be set in 2023. It's wild to have their stories reflected in current times. I was kind of tense listening to this book because each character is ONE decision away from complete ruin. So it was hard to not anticipate what might happen next. Their stories are woven intricately and interestingly. I thought about this book for a long time after I finished it. It had a profound impact on me and I'll definitely be reading more from Sadeqa Johnson.

Emotional story of two black women and their journey/struggles with societal injustices perpetrated on women in the past. So touching and heartfelt.

Set in the 1950s, The House of Eve is the intertwined stories of two Black women, Eleanor, a college student, and Ruby, a highschooler with big dreams, who both experience unplanned pregnancies. Their stories highlight themes like racism, colourism, class, poverty, infertility and accepted roles for women. I was already fairly familiar with the way homes for unmarried mothers operated - although this is the first book I can recall that looked so explicitly at the intersection of race and unmarried mothers - so that section of the book was less impactful for me than for other readers. The book was an undemanding read, with many of the plot points being easy to predict. I found the epilogue unnecessary and didn’t need the story to be wrapped up quite so neatly. A perfectly fine read; one which was ideally suited to the reading bandwidth I had at the time I picked it up.

It is very clear that Mrs.Johnson does VERY THROUGH research when writing historical fiction and are we not truly thankful for that?

Again, I am stunned. ‘Yellow Wife’ made me a fan but ‘The House of Eve’ has made me a Stan 😩. This story was beautiful, but heartbreaking. I felt for Eleanor but Ruby, I wanted to embrace her in a way her mother couldn’t.

This has been my best read so far this year. Can’t wait for what Mrs.Johnson has in store for us next…

Second book of Sadeqa Johnson's I've read and it does not disappoint. I loved both main characters Ruby, a teenager who is smart and hopes to attend college, and Eleanor, a college student whose parents sacrificed a lot to get her there. My favorite quote from the book: "Knowing about racism and being abused by its wrath were two different things."

I also loved the fact there is a very small (but not insignificant) tie-in to characters from her book Yellow Wife.

The author's note at the end is definitely worth the read. She describes where the fictional characters of the book came from as well as background on the real life characters. Fascinating info.
