I’d give it a 3 and a half if I could!

As a writer it was really to see this story evolve and I really wish Tolkien had finished the poem version of it. I LOVED IT.

As for what brings it down, it gets really fragmented at the end where Christopher tries to put together the ending. It jumps around from different texts and his thoughts too much for me. I ended up skimming the last 20 pages or so.

Overall really cool little insight into Middle Earth.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Tolkien's son, Christopher, we who love the incredible world of Tolkien's creation are given another book to read and savor. Christopher Tolkien gathered the full story of Beren and Luthien from amongst all the manuscripts, notes, and literary fragments he could. This book is fascinating! Tolkien's story of two lovers overcoming impossible odds to be together is told in full; the story is also elaborated upon and contextualized within the larger scope of Tolkien's world by Christopher Tolkien. C. Tolkien has shown how the story evolved and changed as his father explored the history of his creation. How lucky are we to continue getting glimpses into Tolkien's incredible mind even 44 years after his passing?
