adventurous tense fast-paced

Thirteen years after the devastating murder of Assemblyman Derrick Bell and the near-fatal assault on his wife, Noelle, the FBI revisits the cold case. Now serving as a detective herself, Noelle finds herself compelled to confront long-buried secrets from her troubled past—secrets rooted in a toxic marriage and the hidden truths surrounding that fateful night. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the case was never truly closed; it was only waiting to be reopened. To prevent another tragedy, Noelle must summon the courage to face the full truth, no matter the cost.

Her First Mistake is an excellent kickoff to the Noelle Marshall series. Kendra Elliot truly delivers with this one—fast-paced, action-packed, and thoroughly engaging. The narration was exceptional, bringing the story vividly to life. The only issue I had was the frequent switching between the present investigation and the events from thirteen years ago, which made the story a bit hard to follow in the beginning.

Aside from that, it’s a solid read—well worth your time.

Her First Mistake (Noelle Marshall, Book 1)
Kendra Elliot does it again! Another 5-star read and a fantastic start to a brand-new series.
In this book, we learn a great deal about the glamorous Noelle Marshall and her past. Now a detective with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Noelle steps into the spotlight after being introduced as a secondary character in the Columbia River Series. This time, she takes the front seat – and she owns it.
I loved the story, the twists and turns, and how the mystery kept me guessing right until the very end. I had no idea who had killed Noelle’s husband 13 years ago until it was finally revealed.

It was also a real treat to see familiar faces from other Kendra Elliot books make an appearance – FBI Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick and Detective Evan Bolton (his girlfriend, Rowan Wolff, is also mentioned).
