I wasn’t sure what I was going into with this book but I absolutely ate it up! I didn’t want to put the book down and the ending left me wanting more. The characters are diverse and really well written. I enjoy the dynamic of the “main” 3 friends. I also love the sarcastic banter between them. The mystery and linking it with tales of the past was really good too.

I think the show was better

Ok, Mr. Coben's premises are far-fetched...and Mickey Bolitar, so far, doesn't have the charm of Myron, but it's stil an enjoyable read.

3.5/5 I just relistened to this for a Bolitar buddy read and this deserves a bump in rating. Also, I didn’t mention it in my first review but this ends on a cliffhanger.

Overall, it wasn’t bad. I think there’s a bit too much going on for the story to develop into a satisfying conclusion. I’ll read book 2 because I STILL don’t know wth happened to Brad

I don’t read a ton of adult mysteries but when I find a young adult one I’m eager to jump. Knowing that Shelter was written by a master mystery writer it made it all the more enticing. Shelter opens up right into the mystery and the questions never stop coming. Immediately I was wondering what happened to Ashley and how these things were all connected. This teen, Mickey Bolitar, is definitely going places he shouldn’t go, all to figure out where this girl has disappeared to. Then you throw in the neighborhood’s scary resident - the bat lady – and immediately I am reminded of the house that we would all run past when we were kids. Mickey’s friends Spoon and Ema are the most entertaining characters in the book – sidekicks, yes, but they get some of the best lines in the bunch. Spoon is just completely random and Ema is a smart-ass, bad-ass, emo/goth kinda chick that doesn’t screw around.

What didn’t sell me on the book was that too much of the mystery was left open at the end, that this kid Mickey had strong enough feelings for Ashley after only a few weeks together, and how some of the other people came to be involved within the story. It was a stretch. Shelter was a crazy quick read for me, it just kept moving and moving, and there is no lack of action in the story. I only wish that it would have felt more realistic in combining all of the different elements of the story and that there would have been a few more answers at the end.

Ending a book like that should be illegal

Quick, interesting read.

I am actually surprised that I finished this one. Maybe because I needed an audiobook and this was only 6 discs... anyway, I did get to the end of it and it was just not a book for me. The characters did not speak like teenagers, the narrator didn't even think like a natural teen. The "mystery" was convoluted and the ending was just weird. At least twice per disc I was saying "what??" and shaking my head over some very bad dialogue or description. I've not read anything else by Coben, and I"m thinking I won't ever. I do not recommend.

A great mystery/suspense novel - I'm always looking for good YA mysteries. My only complaint would be the way it ended - what a cliff hanger! Thank goodness the second book in the series has already been published! I'd like to try Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series at some point, too.
