Recommended by my godson, it reminded me of a couple other books I have read but whose titles elude my memory right now and probably forever.

Enjoyed it very much as I plowed through it. Not sure if I will pursue the next installment as my mind is content with leaving the story where it ended.

Everlost is a fascinating tale of what happens to children, that somehow get off-track on their journey to the afterlife. The story begins with a fatal car accident, where Nick and Allie are thrust into the world of Everlost after bumping each other off course on the way to the "light". They are found by a long-time "Everlight" resident, who they nickname Leaf, because he lives alone in a forest. Leaf is content to live in this forest forever, but Nick and Allie want to find out what happened to them, and more importantly, what happened to their families.

But when they leave Leaf's safe forest, they find out that traveling is going to be harder than they think. Normal ground (where no one has died) is like quicksand and they must constantly keep moving or they will sink to the center of the earth. There are rogue groups of adolescents that bully any "green soul" (newcomer) to steal his or her possessions. But worst of all is the McGill. The McGill hates children and will "rip out your tongue if it hears you talk" or "tear out your lungs if it hears you breath".

Luckily they soon find Mary Hightower, the self-proclaimed queen of lost kids. Nick feels like he he's found a home here with Mary and her followers, but Allie isn't satisfied with Mary's answers, or her way of life. Against all warnings, Allie begins her own search for answers and ends up learning the "Criminal Art" of haunting.

I thought this was a really fantastic book! I am actually surprised that I liked it so much. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. The kids and I listened to this on audiobook and all of us thought it was a great story, full of very interesting characters and clever plot twists! In the YA world of vampires and faerys, Everlost finds it's own unique way to immortality. I will be picking up the new audiobook Everwild ASAP!

Parents should know: This was a pretty clean read, but there were a couple of "minor" curse words, and a moderate amount of violence, and a couple of kisses (nothing heavy). For the full content review, go to Everlost on Parental Book Reviews.

"If you're lost, stay put. Don't walk away, don't wander off, don't talk to strangers, and just because you see a light, it doesn't give you permission to cross the street..."

This book left me with a strange creepy feeling, it's ghosts, what else could I expect? It would have been disappointing otherwise.

It was an original concept. I must say that I liked it and the second book promises.

Spoiler What was predictable was that the McGill was Mary's brother.

I already disliked Mary from the beginning, I was suspicious, I am glad I was right that she would turn out be evil, she had an air of crazy about her lol.

The other thing is that I don't like the ships Mary and Nick, nope I hated it. McGill and Allie are much better but still preferred Allie with Nick ...

Nick and Allie both die in the same head-on collision but on their way towards the light, they bump into each other and don't make it where they need to go. Instead, they find themselves in a place called Everlost. It shares space with our world, but they can only interact with the kids who also live there or the items they loved enough to bring with them. They first meet a kid who they name Leaf who is content to live endlessly in his tree. Nick and Allie aren't content staying still and want to explore this "new world" and find a way back home. Then they meet a bunch of kids who are watched over by Mary, the self-proclaimed expert of Everlost. She helps kids find their niche and watches over them like her own flock of sheep. Nick falls instantly in love but Allie thinks that Mary's setup is fishy and is determined to find her way back to the world of the living, no matter what shady characters she needs to tangle with to do so.

This was fantastic but I'm not surprised. Shusterman never disappoints.
While this book is categorized as YA, it definitely reads more middle grade.

Confession: I picked this up not because I was interested in the story but because Nick Podehl narrates. He didn't disappoint; neither did the book. Not sure I'll pick up the rest of the series, but I really enjoyed this.

This was a useless review; sorry.
