Finished re-reading this cute little Christmas story this morning. Was browsing through my old books last week and saw this so I decided to give it another read. I think it was in 2015 when I first read this book? Ahhh, I've missed reading light, Christmasy novels like this one!

This is about a lonely man who moves to a small town for what he believes his last Christmas. It's hilarious and heartwarming. I loved reading it so much! I should read it again next Christmas season!

I read this originally a long time ago, but I didn't remember anything about it except a vague feeling that maybe it was a bit much. And a re-read confirms that it definitely is a bit much. It's well crafted, and if you are one of those people who automatically says that "It's a Wonderful Life"* is your favorite Christmas movie, you might love this. If you are however, more like Scrooge before his transformation than after, this might bring forth a bah, humbug or two. She does manage to hit most every cliché you can think of, and as another reviewer put it, everyone lives happily ever after except the bird.

I wanted something light after finishing Wolf Hall, but this was, perhaps, too light and airy for my tastes. Flagg gets two stars for an imaginative story and several characters who are well developed.

Now I feel like the Grinch.

Oswald T. Campbell's doctor has told him that if he doesn't spend the winter in a warmer climate then it may be his last. Oswald packs up and moves to the small town of Lost River, Alabama. Once he gets there he is greeted by a cast of colorful characters, including a store-owner and his little redbird named Jack.

A Redbird Christmas is classic Fannie Flagg. It's filled with colorful, Southern characters with good hearts and intentions. It's a little on the sappy side but it's a Christmas story so I think it's to be expected. And yes, everything is wrapped up neatly and tied with a bow at the end but would you want a Christmas story to end any other way? I wouldn't want to read books like this all the time but it was the perfect choice to put me in the Christmas spirit and bring some joy to my heart.

spoiler alert... seriously the bird had to die?!

Wonderful! Warm, tender, sweet yet complex people. Characters you care about. Loved it!

I will read anything that Fannie Flagg reduces to words on a page. She makes me feel good about myself, my neighbors, my family, my world. Literature does not have to teem with allegory, symbolism and nuance to touch me deeply and keep my eyes looking forward with hope and optimism.
