I liked it well enough. Likeable characters and the visualization was good. Easy to read and a nice book for the time of year.

I shelved this as cozy fiction which I think is the best definition for it. Was this a literary masterpiece? I mean no. But did it feel like hearing the Gilmore girls theme song for the first time again. Yeah.

Clean fiction; sweet story from the South

So, Oswald is told he has a year to live.

But…

If he moves to a warmer climate, he may live a bit longer.

So…

Off he goes to Lost River, Alabama where he is quickly embraced by the community.

And…

There we find quite a few lost souls, too.

Betty, the landlady. Roy, the shopkeeper. Patsy, the neglected child.

And then there is Jack, a Red Cardinal Bird who as an injured chick is being looked after by Roy at the store and is beloved by all.

This story has many stories within. Feuds. A bride left at the altar. A secret society of older ladies. And of course, Oswald.

How does Oswald fit in with all the other lost souls?

Fannie Flagg is an artist. She is an amazing storyteller who not only brings to life the atmosphere, but her characters are life-like and believable.

There are so many other characters that come through to appreciate, that as readers we feel like we are sitting in the store eavesdropping on all the comings and goings…

As well as being a part of Jack’s rebirth, too.

Not to say that this won’t be a roller coaster ride at times.

Just know this…

A roller coaster does lift us up, too! And this story will make us laugh and give us a sense of warmth and cuddly and a good feeling of humanity wrapped in a warm blanket.

Because…

There are miracles in Lost River, Alabama.

And as I remember…

A perfect book discussion selection.

A co-worker gave this book to me, telling me it's one of her favorite Christmas books ever. It's not typically something I would pick up on my own, but it seemed a good time to read it. I wanted something light and easy to read and this definitely fit the bill. Overall, it was a sweet story with an uplifting ending.

I found this to be a cute heart warming story. It wasn't brilliantly written or anything just a wonderful story with a nice simple happy ending.
