I started out not liking it, then a couple of chapters in began loving the town of Lost River and all the people that live there. I will never uderstand lying to a child even if you think it's in their best interest, but the book had a happy ending, so what can I say? The best description of this book is on the back, a review by The New York Times Book Review "Flagg keeps it simple, she keeps it bright, she keeps it moving right along - and, most of all, she keeps it beloved." Amen.

I thought this would be a title I read out of season after finding a reference to it in another novel. Little did I know that it would be perfect for a snow day as a charming, feel-good, southern comfort.

As always I laugh, I cry, and I leave feeling like I’ve just been hugged by a new and an old friend...

Rounded up, a heartwarming story.

A lonely old man on disability is told he must move to warmer climes immediately. The doctor finds an old pamphlet about a resort in Alabama. It has burned down, but a woman finds a room for him. The store owner in the town has rescued a cardinal that some young boys had shot. A young girl with a twisted leg is enthralled by the bird and adopted by the town. A day after Christmas miracle has life improving for everyone.

The perfect quick read for the holidays. This book was adorable from start to finish!

A reread this book every year. It’s such a Christmas feel good classic.
inspiring lighthearted medium-paced

Agree with several reviewers who say the story is predictable, a bit sappy. This Hallmark-style storytelling is not usually something I enjoy, but I found this book especially endearing through the first half. Once the Stranger entered the story, and the hospital admission's permissions and payment chapters, it veered beyond my ability to suspend disbelief.

I must say that the sweetness & quirky folks of the community, and Jack's antics & enchantment of the town kept me reading. And I did find the reason (love and caring for another) for reconnection between two men who hated each other to make sense.

Perfect happy ending including follow-ups on characters. Always knew that was coming. Light, fun, and heartwarming.
