I have no idea how this book has nearly 4 stars on Goodreads, as it is literally the dumbest book I’ve read in years. Racism, lying, and a laughably predictable storyline. I don’t think the author could have written a more cliche story. Like a Hallmark movie gone very wrong.

Such an enjoyable read, and while Christmas is in the title, it could be enjoyed all year long.
The characters of Lost River come alive on the page. Fannie Flagg has such a gifted way with dialogue and interactions. It's her subtleties and turns-of-phrases that bring a slight smile to my face as I'm reading.
It's a quick read, but filled with moments that will last a long time.

This is the whimsical story of a hard-luck orphan, Oswald T. Campbell, mostly named for the can of Campbell's Tomato [T:] soup found in the basket with him. Given only a month or so to live, his Chicago doctor sends him to Lost River, Alabama, where a sanitarium once was located. He is quickly absorbed into the warm and friendly community of this wee village (pop. between 50 and 110), and little by little recovers not only his health but his faith in his fellow man.
The town is populated by Colorful Characters, but Ms. Flagg doesn't get absolutely goofy with them, as some authors do. It's a sweet, optimistic story, but she keeps enough suspense and tension to make it feel less than completely predictable. I enjoyed visiting Lost River and spending time with its inhabitants, and I found myself wishing that I could stay longer.

I loved the first 2/3rds of the book, and the main character, and the setting, especially the description of a Chicago winter and how he escapes to a very small town in Alabama. The descriptions are careful and make you want to visit the small town yourself. The moral dilemma that faces the characters and their solution of it didn't sit well with me, and I found the ending disappointing. I felt Ms. Flagg had created a lot of interesting storylines throughout the book and a few more chapters to show us how they worked out would have really improved the book.
I'm the only one in my book group that didn't love it, so if you like manufactured Christmas stories with a heartwarming flair, read it very quickly and you'll probably enjoy it and think I'm too critical, but I expected more from this author.
