This is a promising start to a trilogy that presumably will be all about this book's coming-of-age protagonist Dawn/Aurora.

It's told in flashback and has lots of fun inserting its characters into historic events. If 1930s America is your thing you'll love this.

Thematically it's about the political and scientific revolutions of the 1930s. It looks at differences and dualities. There's plenty of nuclear physics and atomic analogies and I'm fairly certain a few chain reactions to come.

It still stands that I either completely love or completely hate Neal Stephenson books. This was definitely the latter. Wtf did I just read? The main character read like a manic pixie dream girl and there seemed to be no plot really? It barely felt like a Neal Stephenson book except there was an occasional attack of scientific details and sometimes there was a clever sentence or two that was a joy to read.
