This series is always good, although this book had a few too many space fights and not enough twisty plotting for my taste.

Going in chronological order, so this is #5.

This one is a bit interesting in that it fakes you out even more than usual in terms of where the story is going. There's a lot of political machinations going on and if you're listening on audiobook like me, it pays to find a map of the wormholes around the Hegen Hub (it's in my physical copy, dunno if it's online), because they only really explain it once.

Anyway, it's a very twisty turny story that keeps you guessing and Miles as Admiral Nesmith is always great,
even if he's off the Space Meth this time
.
Gregor gets some great characterization and screen time too and I appreciated the dynamic between him and Miles. Looks like he's got license to go off and do cool stuff and get into trouble rather than stay home (and still get into trouble), so we'll see what happens next...

I'm feeling a bit "meh" about this book compared to the earlier Vorkosigan saga books. It seemed to get a bit bogged down in space battle mechanics. Really enjoyable otherwise and it only loses out in direct comparison to the earlier books in the series, for me.

Re-read: May 2016

Reread October 2018, and still agree on my earlier review comments.

April 2022 re-read: continue to agree with my earlier comments, although the last sections of this one are delightful.

This is such a great series! In this entry, we follow Mile's first adventures outside of the Academy. At every turn, he has to work 3x as hard as anyone else to use his wit and superior intelligence to overcome his physical liabilities. He's a great character set in fantastic and thrilling situations.
