This was the weakest instillation so far, IMO. It started as something entirely different and changes gears. I was glad to see that LMB felt the same way (in her afterward), and it makes sense that she’d choose to leave it alone since it won a Hugo. She describes this as war thriller, but I get a ‘experimental stab at James Bond’ vibe. There’s also publication order vs. internal chronological issue - since this was written to bridge Mountains and Labyrinth. I wanted to skim that last quarter, the climactic battle is all of 2 pages, I’m going 2.5 stars.

"He hunched his shoulders. Was it true? Could that be himself in twenty years? Sick with cynicism and unvented rage, a shelled self thrilled only by mastery, power games, control, armor-plate with a wounded beast inside?"

Man, for all that these books are refreshing in their fun and sense of humor, Bujold really doesn't pull punches.

This book more than the Warrior's apprentice felt more tightly focused. The themes and reprises of themes were carefully timed and explored complexly.

I'm continuing to deeply love the characters in this world. I'm so glad this is a long series.

The Vorkosigan series is fun enough that I keep coming back to it, but I've yet to be really blown away by any single title. This one is yet another solid space opera romp, with our returning hero Miles Vorkosigan wildly improvising his way around a developing war situation and cleverly escaping from a succession of imprisonments. As with its later prequel Barrayar I'm a little surprised that this novel won the Hugo Award, but I admit I had a good time reading it.

Miles is back at it again! I love when he gets to play Admiral Miles Naismith and be tricksy with the Dendarii Mercenaries. I love this copy: "Miles Vorkosigan graduates from the Academy, joins a mutiny, is placed under house arrest, goes on a secret mission, reconnects with his loyal Dendarii Mercenaries, rescues his Emperor, and thwarts an interstellar war. Situation normal, if you're Miles." That about sums it up. I love likeable, highly competent (and lucky) main characters, and Miles certainly is that. I listened to this audiobook on my way to Korea for the Pyeongchang Olympics, and it was a joy to listen as Miles outsmarts his antagonists and saves the day.
