Another good and simply fun Vorkosigan book. I appreciate the character growth of Miles throughout. Not one of your "deep thinking" sci-fi books, but it's okay to just have a fun space romp. Similar to the last book, I kind of had a hard time keeping track of the exact threads of diplomacy. But, once you give up on that and just accept "okay, it makes sense for Miles to do this" it's fine.

Miles has graduated from the military academy and hopes to be posted to the new Barrayaran flagship but instead finds himself the weatherman at an Arctic outpost under the command of a near-psychopath.  Problems ensue.  Complications follow.  Eventually, Miles finds himself
basically on his own out in space and runs into his cousin, the Emperor Gregor, who has run away from home and gotten himself enslaved!  I'd totally forgotten about Gregor's mishaps.  The ending scene with Miles's father is heartening and satisfying.

i can't really tell what my star rating is on any of these. i'm barrelling through them and having such fun on the whole that i have no idea how each book gets individually rated just yet. I think cavilo fell a little flat as a villain motivation-wise.

Good, but not as enjoyable as the first Miles book.

Miles gets himself in deep doo-doo in this one; when he makes a stand during his first military assignment, he can't imagine the complications it will cause. Another page-turning plot, and it's great to see Miles bounce around from one problem to the next (many of which he causes himself). A fun, fun, adventure.

Consumed via audiobook with my partner while preparing to move (packing, etc.)

My major regret for this novel is that the mercenary theme from the previous novel wasn't carried on. While I adore Miles in all of his roles, I have to say Admiral Naismith is my favourite among them all. As semi punishment/incentive upon his graduation from the Military, Miles is sent to serve as Chief Meteorologist on Kyril Island.

Stranded with a raving commander officer, Miles quickly finds himself in trouble and back home in no time. In an effort to keep him out of trouble, Illyan recruits Miles into ImpSec and decides to put Miles' identity as Naismith to some good.

Along the way Miles finds himself as the reluctant protector for Emperor Greggor and once again, head of his mercenaries. I really wish there had been more chances for Miles to embrace his Naismith personality, but I enjoyed the twists and turns of the novel.
