Beaten but not defeated! Freshly graduated from the Academy, Miles is dismayed to find himself assigned to Kyril Island Military Base as a Weatherman. The post is an exercise in temperament, 6 months in exile, quietly behaving himself for the possibility of a post on the Prince Serg, the newest and shinest addition to the Barrayar fleet.
Which of course Miles manages to fail miserably, coming close to Treason on his way out. The novel struggles for a few chapters here, expanded from it's original Novella we're then thrown into a twisty turny plot of coincidences featuring special appearances from old favourites such as the Dendarii Mercenaries and even good old Gregor manages to escape for a bit of fun.

"Eh, Miles," ytlen tunnustavalt kyll.
Wonderful! I loved every bit of this addition to the Vorkosigan saga. It's easy to see why this won the Hugo. Miles is engaging rather than pathetic. We get to see a bit more of Gregor too. I hope the rest of the series is more like this novel.
Poor Miles gets thrown from impossible situation to impossible situation. He does incredibly well by using his wits and scrapes through by the skin of his teeth, then the universe throws him another curve ball. The poor boy. It was very fun to accompany him on his romp through the Hegen Hub, and to see more of the characters we've come to love and those who haven't had a prominent role yet, like Gregor. I had a great time with this book.

The sarcastic conversations and side comments made this an entertaining listen! I had a hard time following the political stuff over the audiobook, and there were a few references to previous books in the series that I haven't read, but it was still fun space opera.
