How did this win a Hugo?

I love the Vorkosigan series, but this is the worst book in it. This is like… 3 unfinished books poorly cobbled together, and 2 of those are just Miles randomly stumbling around, somehow managing to fall up a bunch of ladders.

Least favorite series. But not badly written.

This went more in the direction of cozy space opera than innovative sci-fi, but I liked all the characters and the writing style made the book very entertaining.

This is the fifth (chronologically) novel of Vorkosigan saga. It won Hugo in 1991. I read is as a part of the Vorkosigan challenge in February 2020 at Hugo & Nebula Awards: Best Novels group.

Miles Vorkosigan finished the Naval Academy and dreams about an officer position on one of the ships. Instead he is sent to a frozen island as a meteorologist, “to check how he can operate under stress”. The infantry training camp is a dumping ground for disgraced officers, drunkards and other undesirables. Moreover, Miles is instantly disliked by locals, bot as an outsider and ‘mutant’. Once again he has to prove his worth.

Like the previous volume, [b:The Warrior's Apprentice|61906|The Warrior's Apprentice (Vorkosigan Saga, #2)|Lois McMaster Bujold|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1170597854l/61906._SY75_.jpg|2792], it is filled by daring and risky adventures, ‘running on a staircase that falls apart’. Some situations are extremely unlikely but nevertheless they make a great story.

This volume deals with the start of Miles' military career, such as it is. It has some good outer space adventures and manages not to be rapey for a change. This book has a real anti-toxic masculinity vibe, which rules. I liked a lot about this, but don’t want to be spoilery, I’ll give it a solid B+.

Another entertaining entry in the Miles Vorkosigan space opera (the second book starring Miles). Miles runs true to form using brains and creative thinking to win through in the end. I really enjoyed Miles & Gregor together and laughed out loud at Miles collection of supervisors/ former supervisors in the brig so they wouldn't interfere with his plans.
