It isn't the best piece of writing I've ever read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Miles is a great character and I can't wait to read the next book in the series! An excellent adventure!
fast-paced
These are so light-hearted and fun. Miles gets in such ridiculous predicaments, it’s hard not to enjoy it.
The Vor Game started off with a foray into depressing Barrayar landscape (woeful peasants 46, winters harsh like my father, etc -- all of the things that drive home the Russian-ness of Barrayar), but quickly enough picked up to be a delightful shipping manifesto for Miles/Gregor. They are both so horribly awkward and young and hilarious and familiar and tied in knots with Barrayaran military & loyalty kinks that I just want to eat my popcorn at them for about 2342930 hours :D :D :D I am also deeply amused that one out of two big deal Vorkosigan SPOILERS I knew - about Jole -- proved to be a source of continuous delight as Miles described how stupidly attractive and capable Jole is and how fond of him his father is, etc etc, and all I could hear in my head is LMB cackling madly as she wrote this. My congratulations to Jole for landing the army waifu deal while dodging Miles responsibilities, I am impressed. Poor Simon Illyan got himself a much worse deal :D

I enjoyed this vastly more than The Warrior's Apprentice, and I'm glad I stuck with it!

Super enjoyable just as the previous books have been. I like the way Miles raises up the people around him. The people who don't appreciate him generally have outdated notions of value and the idea that dues need to be paid before advancement is awarded. That's a common occurrence and completely disheartening if you've ever been the target of it.
Gregor was finally given an opportunity to develop into a character with personality. One of my favourite things about him, and Miles, and the circle around them, is the intense loyalty they feel towards each other. The sense of security that creates contributes to a general feeling of optimism in the book.
On to the next book, [b:Cetaganda|76812|Cetaganda (Vorkosigan Saga, #9)|Lois McMaster Bujold|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1386924035s/76812.jpg|2802].
