3.5 Stars. Closer to 3.49 than 3.51. I loved the characters of Thrawn and Vader. Their dynamic through the book was really good. And I really loved how the book flipped back and forth between present and past. That made for really interesting reading. Incredibly underdeveloped minor characters and boooooring battle scenes (im probably in the minority there) pulled this down from a 4 Star to a 3 Star.

Not as good as the first book in the series by a mile. Struggled a lot with the pacing and also starting with three points of view was a too convoluted and hard to follow. It picked up for me once we narrowed down to two points of view but ultimately feels like filler to get us to book three. Wasn’t as intrigued by the relationship between Vader and Thrawn as I feel I should have been - I think it lacked some complexity ? Especially on behalf of Vader it would have been so easy to add a bit more zest and conflict to his feelings about anakin and perhaps that would have made the back and forth of stubbornness between the two characters a little more palatable? I’m not sure.

Anyway the book was still good because it’s Star Wars and loving Star Wars will always carry my enjoyment of these books whether they’re lacking or otherwise - I am totally biased. Looking forward to reuniting with the characters I sorely missed in this book while reading the next one!

My brain was on full delusion mode when I read this book. Will I say how? No way!! Too embarrassing!!

I know nothing about Star Wars but throughout the book from the perspectives of the underlings, they'd say things like "Vader would kill me if I did that," and all kinds of things about how scary and intolerant Vader is. Two seconds later you watch Thrawn talk down to Vader and Vader just... goes with it. You just KNOW if Timmy Zahn wrote Vader correctly, Thrawn would be a dead man, LOL.

But in a way, it makes this book really funny. I couldn't take it seriously so although it isn't a comedy book, it practically was. Thrawn just straight up doesn't know how to talk to people and it's SO funny.
