This book had potential to be really fantastic, as the world-building was so immersive and magical. I think good editing could have saved it from being forgettable, which unfortunately is what it is. There were too many characters to keep track of and the motive was too convoluted in the end. I struggled to endorse Marion’s work at the agency as well. We never saw them do anything useful, so it just seems like overall a bad idea to continue running it when it’s so easily corrupted.

I had a hard time understanding what was going on in the book. I didn’t feel a connection with any of the characters. May be better to read rather than listen to.

Marion Lane and the Midnight Murder reminded me of an adult muggle Harry Potter sleuthing to find answers to the suspicious activity happening in the school.
