I love Emma, and I love Lev AC Rosen, but this did not work for me. The characters all felt much older than high school and many of the classic Emma conflicts were pushed to the end or rushed through. Some of the metaphors/themes ended up very overplayed (how many times do the flower petals have to come up before we get the hint...) That being said I do the characters (especially Miles and Taylor, yes Emmett is a bitch but that's kind of the point of the story) and loved the discussions of how queer relationships can be whatever we want them to be.

This was exactly what I hoped it would be based on the premise. I love the original Emma, and this queer retelling was a lovely way to capture that story in a modern setting. It sort of reminded me of Heartstopper. So, if you like Jane Austen and you like Alice Oseman, you'll probably like this as well.

I probably shouldn't have read this book given how much I dislike Emma Woodhouse, but I read it for a grad school assignment.

I will say that L.C. Rosen succeeded at adapting Emma by Jane Austen, because his main character, Emmett bugged me in all the same ways as her main character.  This book was not for me, but I would recommend it for readers looking for a contemporary romance with elements of grief and a diverse cast of characters, as well as people who love Clueless.
