I think I found this book at a time when, I was open to receive these messages.
I’ve been sitting on my thoughts for this book for a week now because of the impact it had on me.
I don’t typically read non-fiction and definitely not books typically classified as self-help books. But this one was calling my name and damn did it ever.
It not only gave me some insight on how trauma and the environment around you impacts you both physically and emotionally, whether we are aware of it or not, but it also felt like a call out.
I never truly understood how impactful trauma could be. With a look at people’s lived experiences through Gabor Maté’s writing, I seem to have answers to a lot of ongoing unanswered questions. I felt seen and called out by a lot of what I read. In a way some dots have been connected and this has only opened a door to a wider corridor.
Thank you to @penguinrandomca #penguinreads for providing me with a copy of this book for review.

I didn’t find it as appealing as initially I thought.

A thorough exploration of the connection between our personal traumas and our societal relationships. I feel this book bridges a crucial gap between two conversations, one about the ways in which our society is harmful and toxic, and one about the role of trauma in our physical, emotional, and mental health. Mate is knowledgeable and meticulous, but his greatest strength as a guide in this journey lies in his humility and self-awareness, which, while not perfect, are far higher than those of almost any other author I've seen in the pop-medicine and self-help genre
