Good amount of hot male characters swirling around FMC. PI similar to Kate Daniels but they are different characters. I find the family element of this FMC compelling. I love the grandma she’s iconic and funny. Magic system is interesting. More immediate romance than Kate Daniel’s. Same strengths. Good world building/magic system development and characters. PI theme

I genuinely think this was the best romance-fantasy I've read. The pacing, the language, the description of anxiety, fear and worry were so well described. It had a slow start but a really strong finish and I will most definitely be reading the book after this.
Brief description: Nevada Baylor runs a detective firm where the settle low-level cases and now is being as to bring in a suspect in a murder case. she between a rock and a hard place because of money, her family's wellbeing etc. on the other end, there's this guy name Connor-"Mad" Rogan—he got too much money and is sent on the same mission with mysterious motives. Their and unlikely pair that forced to work together.
My ONLY critic was that sometimes there was dialogue that felt dull/slow and tone was too dry. Now I'll begin my gushing
What made this so enjoyable is the way were learned about the power structure in this work. There's levels, low and high rank magic users, rules and applications that differ with each person but the feedback/consequence is consistent. I like how the magic application made sense for the urban/current world landscape. It was published in 2014 and the mention of vine made me giggle.
The plot was prioritize and I felt like neither main character did fold or shift because of the attraction they had with one another. Nevada cares about her family and prioritzes them over everything, even her own well-being. We doing really known Rogan's motives, at least not all of them and but he's characterization is so consistent you're lowkey rooting for him to get what he wants too.
Their banter begins with a kidnapping and unfolds into unlikely partners, unlikely friends to full on flirting. The pacing of their attraction was so perfect and sprinkles in at the perfect time. It wasn't distracting or pulled away from the mission but the depth of romance and attraction was felt! Which made the ending/cliffhanger SO juicy.

I feel mixed on this one. Paranormal romance isn’t my favorite genre to begin with, and the pacing here is so fast I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I didn’t really buy the romance - I think I needed more pages to be reeled in. That said, the epilogue hints at the compelling character development I love from House Andrews so I *will* be reading the next installment.
Overall: fun, easy to read, a bit spicy, and so well written.
(Also, if you liked this book and enjoy a slower burn, I recommend Elemental by Whitney Hill. It’s also urban fantasy with a plucky, out-of-her-league private investigator FMC who’s just learning the breadth of her power, with more high fantasy elements and lots of found family vibes.)
