This book was actually just so much fun to read. I think Ernest is hilarious, and he makes a really clever narrator. The Cunningham family is a hot mess of characters that fill out the story; I kept oscillating between rooting for them and excitedly waiting for their potential deaths. The way this story is written reminds me of the Knives Out movies with a more comedic tone and that was all I could have asked for. It's also not very dark even though it's a murder mystery, which I liked. The plot twist wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped but it still shocked me because I absolutely didn't see it coming. I wish I could read it again for the first time, but a reread in the future will have to do.

The mystery got a bit too convoluted in the end to be really enjoyable, but I did enjoy the humor and narrator throughout. My big sticking point before the big reveals was partially because of that perspective- in a book that repeatedly tells you you're being told the truth, I couldn't suspend disbelief for
his hand. A broken wrist would be one thing- he degloved (and crushed) his fucking hand, didn't get proper treatment for what, 48 hours? Him running around in snowmobiles and researching and generally moving as if he was just a bit sore was just too much to be believed, besides the fact that his hand was glued to and then ripped out of an oven mitt- how is this man not in septic shock? I just don't see the point in such a gruesome injury if it gets played back almost immediately.
This also feels like it was written by someone who hasn't interacted much with kids because the ages are very off for a critical scene.
If the youngest was five, they were all well old enough to unlock and open the car doors. I'm forgetting exact ages, but Michael had to be 8/9 at least, right?
We also just skimmed over the total
lack of police too easily- if Lucy posted on instagram and Juliette and Ern were able to research the Black Tongue from the resort, someone was able to call 911 when there was no one but the useless Crawford days in. At least point out that it seems weird!
Rant done! It was fun enough!

Am I still confused about what exactly happened and why? Yes. Yes I am. But I was just so happy to be along for the ride that I don’t care. Ern has a dry sorta humor and lived him as the “reliable narrator.”

I’ll likely reread this again someday to have more context while I’m going through it to hopefully catch all of the things that were laid out along the way.

Hilarious and I enjoyed the backstories and how everything came together.

Some parts had too much information to absorb without rewinding, which was bothersome.
