A classic horror story about a Monkeys Paw that grants three wishes. Needless to say although the wishes are granted things don't work out as expected for those making the wishes. A nicely creepy short story. Incidentally The League Of Gentleman did a darkly humorous pastiche of the story for their Christmas special a number of years ago, although in their case it wasn't a Monkeys Paw but something a bit ruder belonging to a monkey that was the subject of their story. I'd not realised the connection until I read this story.
The unintended consequences of wishes is a reoccurring theme in most folk lore. The final wish and its repercussions are vague enough you can twist a dark meaning to the story.
