Very much like an abbreviated version of one of M.R. James' short stories, this 10-minute read operates as an immediate lesson in how actions have consequences - in business terms, there is no free lunch.
Unfortunately, due to the very limited length (4134 words) there is little opportunity to provide character development, and though this has lent the story to countless re-enactments on 'The Simpsons', for me as a reader, having such minimal characterization is a drawback. However, as mentioned, from a certain standpoint this only makes the story more adaptable, and transferable to different contexts and settings, outside its gothic origin.

Sergeant-Major Morris threw a monkey's paw into the fire, convinced that it had caused enough harm already. A holy man in India had put a spell on it to demonstrate that people's lives were ruled by fate and any anyone who interfered with that did so to their sorrow.
His host, Mr. White, pulled the monkey paw out of the fire not because he believes it's magic. In fact, he said he had all that he wants—until his adult son, Herbert, suggested he wish for £200 to pay off the mortgage on the house.

Disappointing, for the amount of times I’ve seen this story parodied I’d expected this was a piece of seminal fiction.
It’s just ok unfortunately, it has mystery but no tension and now just feels tired.
I think I’ll just watch the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror version instead.
