As with the previous in the series, I could not tell you the plot of this book. But I am absolutely going to continue with this series. I enjoy the world and characters, and despite not holding my attention, I still feel immersed. If I can wrangle copies of my own, I might reread the series and... pay attention to the noir plots at some point in the future, but as is, I do love them as a sort of background media with a kickass lead and funny one-liners.

Kate Kane, paranormal investigator, lover of the Prince of Cups, half-human daughter of the Queen of the Wild Hunt and employer of Elise, a live statue/sex toy (not for Kate I hasten to add, but for her maker who then got bored with her and left her in a car breakers' yard.

In this the second book in the series Kate is approached by a young woman, desperate to find her brother who appears to have disappeared from a London hospital despite having a broken leg. What she discovers is that someone is raising an army of baby vampires and setting them loose in London, against all vampire protocols.

In this we are introduced to two more of Kate's ex-girlfriends. Eve, a tech gazillionaire with a subterranean laboratory a Bond villain would envy, and Corin, a high-end art thief who killed Kate's business partner prior to the first book.

Can Kate rescue her client's brother, defend herself from charges of murdering a vampire Prince, stop the werewolves from going to war with the vampires, refrain from killing her psycho ex Patrick and his vapid new teenage girlfriend, stop Eve from getting herself killed hunting vampires, stay faithful to Julian and solve the mystery? Heck yes she can.

A brilliant fast-paced novel, full of snark and a series of action scenes that keep the reader on the edge of their Kindles.

[b:Iron & Velvet|18144453|Iron & Velvet (Kate Kane, Paranormal Investigator, #1)|Alexis Hall|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1372722799l/18144453._SY75_.jpg|25492234], the first Kate Kane book, had taken me by surprise, in the best way. I’d really enjoyed the gothic vampire / film noir atmosphere, and the cynical but benevolent Kate. I therefore had great expectations for the next one, Shadows & Dreams. I was not disappointed.

Kate is on trial for the murder of one of the London Vampire Princes (read the first book). As she waits for the Council to decide whether her killing him was indeed murder, Kate, with the help of her assistant Elise, a living statue, tries to stop some sort of vampire zombie army from killing everyone in London, all the while dealing with too many girlfriends, past and current, including the one who killed her partner, and all sorts of witches, werewolves, sorcerers and even more vampires.

I won’t even try and get into the details of the story, spoiling it would be a shame. Suffice it to say it’s just as fun, dark, cynical and zany as the first instalment. There’s an excerpt from the third episode at the end of the book, which I didn’t read because I’d rather wait for the whole story, but what matters is that there’s a third episode coming (the first two were reprints, this one seems entirely new). And that’s really good news.

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I laughed so many times reading this... The gentle making fun of Twilight is just amusing. A sentence here, a mention there... Makes the book entertaining.
The main character and narration style reminds me a lot of [b: First Grave on the Right|8788554|First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1)|Darynda Jones|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442963675l/8788554._SY75_.jpg|13662358]. And it turns out I enjoy the style and I want more.
