A beautifully poetic story!
adventurous dark emotional medium-paced
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This is pretty perfectly calibrated to be up my street... Two siblings in modern America inherit their great great grandmother's house on chicken legs and set out on an adventure through backroads Americana pursued by the spectre of their familial and historical trauma.

I'm glad I have a "modern real world but magic/gods are real" book I can recommend that isn't American Gods. This scratches some of the same itches but is a more focused and coherent story, it plays with the structure of folktales and the many incarnations of a character like Baba Yaga.

It's fabulous in every sense.

This story beautifully blends folklore, historical tragedies, and familial drama together to create something entirely original.

Pleasant listen!

One of my absolute favorite reads of the year. It ticked all the right boxes for me—sibling dynamics, magic puppets, folklore, lovely prose, flawless (in my opinion) character arcs. Dark and bleak at the right times, but beautiful and hopeful overall. I finished and immediately wanted to read it over again.
Great audiobook narrator, too!

A beautiful story. I went into it thinking it was going to be another fantasy, but it was a lot more about stories and cultures. It also touched on healing from the past and not running from it. It was a wonderful story and I really recommend it!
